On Oct 1, 2026, between approximately 11:39 a.m. and 12:28 p.m. PDT, users experienced errors signing in to ChatGPT, creating accounts, and using the Ads Platform. A storage-capacity issue interrupted databases supporting these services. Affected services recovered by approximately 12:28 p.m. PDT.
During this period:
Users were temporarily unable to sign in or create accounts. Some users may also have been signed out unexpectedly.
The Ads Platform experienced elevated errors.
Some users could not complete subscription purchases.
A shared storage system reached its capacity limit, interrupting databases that depended on it. This caused errors in sign-in, account creation, subscription purchases, and the Ads Platform.
Engineers freed storage capacity, adjusted database recovery settings, and restarted affected database processes. As the databases recovered, sign-in and other dependent services returned to normal. Customer-facing impact was resolved by approximately 12:28 p.m. PDT.
We plan to make the following change to reduce the impact of similar storage issues:
Reduce shared storage dependencies. We plan to reduce reliance on shared storage so that capacity limits have a more contained impact on our services.
We apologize for the disruption and are continuing to strengthen the reliability of our authentication, subscription, and advertising services.
